Blockstream Jade is a family of hardware wallets that signs transactions for Bitcoin and supported Liquid assets. The device holds the signing keys; the coins themselves remain recorded on their respective blockchains. A companion application prepares transactions and communicates with the network, while the hardware provides a separate place to inspect and authorize spending.

It is not an all-purpose guarantee against loss. Blockstream disclosed a Jade firmware vulnerability in December 2025 after releasing fixes. Separately, its September 23, 2026, report on the Liquid Network described an ongoing recovery from a network-level exploit. Those are different incidents, and using a hardware wallet does not remove the economic risks of assets held on a separate network.

What Blockstream builds, and who Jade is for

Blockstream develops Bitcoin-related infrastructure, including wallet software and technology used by the Liquid sidechain. Jade is its consumer hardware-signing product. The company's continued product releases, store listings and support documentation establish an active product line, not a claim that every component has been independently certified free of flaws.

The official Blockstream Jade overview describes the product family and supported workflows. The relevant audience is people who want a dedicated device between an internet-connected application and the keys authorizing their transactions, and who are prepared to manage recovery information responsibly.

A user seeking support for unrelated cryptocurrency networks should not assume Jade is a substitute for every multi-asset wallet. Supported assets, software and connection methods need to be checked at the model level. The Bitcoin profile explains the distinction between the underlying network and the tools used to access it.

How the signing workflow separates responsibilities

A companion wallet constructs a proposed transaction. Jade then presents information for confirmation and produces the required signature when the user authorizes it. The signed transaction can be broadcast without exporting the recovery phrase to the companion application.

This separation can limit what a compromised computer can do on its own. It is less helpful when the user approves a destination without checking it on the device. A malicious application can still try to persuade someone to authorize the wrong payment or disclose recovery information through another channel.

Jade Plus supports camera-based QR workflows as well as other connection options. QR signing can avoid a direct data connection during that workflow, but air-gapped does not mean no information crosses the boundary. Transaction information still reaches the device, and the user must verify what it asks them to sign.

Do not assume every model shares the same camera, battery or connectivity features. A lower price can reflect a different physical workflow rather than a change in what the underlying blockchain considers a valid signature.

The blind oracle is part of the security model

Jade uses what Blockstream calls a virtual secure element rather than relying on a conventional dedicated secure-element chip for the same role. In the normal PIN-protected arrangement, the ability to decrypt the wallet is split between the device and a blind-oracle service. The design aims to make possession of the locked device alone insufficient to recover its secrets.

That arrangement creates a different dependency from a wholly self-contained unlock process. Users should understand which service the companion software contacts, what happens if it is unavailable and which recovery or advanced alternatives the supported workflow provides.

Blockstream documents options for advanced users, including running their own oracle and workflows that do not persist the seed in the same way. More control also means more operational responsibility. An advanced setting is not automatically safer for someone who cannot reliably maintain or recover it.

The meaningful question is which threats the arrangement addresses. Protection against extraction from a locked device does not protect a recovery phrase photographed on a phone, or a transaction knowingly approved to an attacker's address.

Prices and the cost of the complete setup

On October 16, 2026, Blockstream's US-dollar storefront listed Jade Core at $99 and Jade Plus at $149 to $169, depending on the option. It also listed an older Jade model at a sale price of $67. These are dated store observations, not a promise of stock or a permanent price.

A buyer should check the selected variant, shipping destination, taxes, duties and any accessories at checkout. Bundles are not directly comparable with a device-only listing. A more expensive model may be useful for its screen or signing workflow without changing the need for careful backup handling.

Hardware cost is also separate from blockchain fees. Sending Bitcoin still involves the network's transaction-fee market, and any third-party swap or service can impose its own charge. Buying a wallet does not purchase unlimited free transfers.

What the disclosed Jade firmware vulnerability means

Blockstream's December 16, 2025, disclosure covered affected firmware versions 1.0.24 through 1.0.36 and a transaction-related data-processing vulnerability involving an initialized, unlocked device connected through USB or Bluetooth. The company said the QR workflow was not affected by that specific issue.

The disclosure identifies version 1.0.37 as containing the fix, followed by additional protection in 1.0.38. These are historical remediation versions, not a claim that 1.0.38 is today's latest firmware. Blockstream subsequently announced version 1.0.41 in August 2026.

The vendor reported no evidence of exploitation in the wild at the time of its disclosure. That statement should remain attributed and dated. The practical response is to use the current authenticated update process, verify the device and understand backup requirements before an update, not to conclude that hardware wallets never need maintenance.

Liquid risk is separate from Bitcoin key protection

In its September 23 report, Blockstream said a September 6 Elements validation flaw had allowed unbacked LBTC to be created and bitcoin reserves to be withdrawn. The report described fixes and a staged recovery, with approximately 602 BTC still subject to recovery efforts. It did not establish that every recovery stage had been completed.

This was not described as theft of Jade users' private keys or a defect in Bitcoin's base-layer consensus. It nevertheless matters to a wallet supporting Liquid assets. Control of a key cannot repair a problem in the network or backing arrangement represented by the asset that key controls.

The latest status of Liquid peg operations should therefore be checked before relying on a conversion between LBTC and Bitcoin. No assumption of complete restoration is built into this explainer. Holding native Bitcoin and holding a sidechain representation of bitcoin involve different dependencies, even when one hardware device can sign for both.

Backups remain the final practical test

A recovery phrase can restore access after a device fails or is lost. Anyone else who obtains it may also be able to restore the wallet. A PIN protecting the physical device does not protect a separate copy of the phrase stored carelessly.

An optional passphrase adds another recovery requirement. Losing it can make the associated wallet inaccessible even when the seed words remain intact. The wallet and recovery guide explains why these details should be understood before substantial funds are moved.

Jade's value proposition is a distinct signing device with an openly documented security approach and several physical workflows. Assessing it responsibly means checking the model, current firmware and recovery process, then separately evaluating the assets and networks it supports. No device removes the need to make those decisions.
